Great, a sequel to a comic that depended on knowing a NH tournament deity, connected only by a name. Thank goodness for Google. :)

I must say that this is going to confuse the heck out of anyone who didn't read yesterday's comic. Nevertheless, it's funny.

"Mind the size of a planet, and you ask me to engrave "Elbereth... Even as they stepped over the threshold a single clear
voice rose in song.

        A Elbereth Gilthoniel,
        silivren penna miriel
        o menel aglar elenath!
        Na-chaered palan-diriel
        o galadhremmin ennorath,
        Fanuilos, le linnathon
        nef aear, si nef aearon!

Frodo halted for a moment, looking back. Elrond was in his
chair and the fire was on his face like summer-light upon the
trees. Near him sat the Lady Arwen. [...]
He stood still enchanted, while the sweet syllables of the
elvish song fell like clear jewels of blended word and melody.
"It is a song to Elbereth," said Bilbo. "They will sing that,
and other songs of the Blessed Realm, many times tonight.
Come on!"

of the election tonight I would like to recommend the following link to over a year ago:

While not a stellar comic, it still was a bit ahead of a certain curve. I particularly like, in retrospect, the comment, "Being in Britain, this comic meant nothing to me."

This is why you can't make a reference the sole content of your joke, people.

Quint, do a google search on "Mind the size of a planet" (or, replace Mind with Brain as has been pointed out here), combine what you find with a glance at the previous day's Dudley comic, and see what you come up with.

More fun than just being told, I hope.

BTW, I was worried the queue was empty when I saw Dion had posted a comic, and now it's looking true. :( (Newt(kinds of) small animal, like a lizard, which spends most of
its time in the water.

In the cauldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt and toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg and howlet's wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble."

OHHHHH.

Mediocre. Needs more joke and less obscure reference. But then again, references are always subjective.

You aren't worthy nethackers if you don't know HHGTTG.

I completely agree with The Worthy One. I actually thought yesterday's comic was a H2G2 reference. Until I read the discussion, that is.

One could argue that a worthy Nethacker must be familiar with, let's say, Dune. Would it then be funny to make a strip that goes, "Here is a situation from Dune, but with @'s"?

I've seen the movie. Didn't much like it.

Though I really need to catch up on my fiction reading. However, my apologies, HHGTTG is not at the top of my list.

On the other hand, I could also argue that Nethackers ought to know other freeware games such as Cave Story and La-Mulana. Doesn't necessarily mean that they'll make good comics either.

By the way, I feel bad about criticizing Dion's own comic.

Dion, you're a really awesome person for making this site and inspiring us to make comics and hosting them. Nethack really deserves a webcomic, especially given its huge, diverse, and long-time following, and you're the one to do it. As nerdy and as insanely difficult as it is, Nethack is still one of the best games ever.

That said, though, your style of humor doesn't seem to appeal that well to me, for some reason. Seems that some people disagree with me, especially about your early comics, but I rarely see them these days and they're usually less-than-overwhelmingly-funny requests for new strips.

Then again, I admit I should get cracking on my now year-old file of Dudley's Dungeon strip ideas.

The only characteristics that define a 'worthy nethacker' are that he's clever and nerdy. Although it is helpful to know where your towelThe Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has a few things to say
on the subject of towels.
A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing
an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great
practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as
you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie
on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus
V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it
beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of
Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down down the slow heavy
River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand combat; wrap it
round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze
of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mind-bogglingly
stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't
see you - daft as a brush, but very very ravenous); you can
wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of
course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean
enough.

And yeah, keep up the good work, Dion. I think we're all grateful that you created and still maintain this; at least, I like to think we are.

That probably means time to contribute. I whish my own active sense of humor wereIn 1573, the Parliament of Dole published a decree, permitting
the inhabitants of the Franche-Comte to pursue and kill a
were-wolf or loup-garou, which infested that province,
"notwithstanding the existing laws concerning the chase."
The people were empowered to "assemble with javelins,
halberds, pikes, arquebuses and clubs, to hunt and pursue the
said were-wolf in all places where they could find it, and to
take, burn, and kill it, without incurring any fine or other
penalty." The hunt seems to have been successful, if we may
judge from the fact that the same tribunal in the following
year condemned to be burned a man named Giles Garnier, who
ran on all fours in the forest and fields and devoured little
children, "even on Friday." The poor lycanthrope, it appears,
had as slight respect for ecclesiastical feasts as the French
pig, which was not restrained by any feeling of piety from
eating infants on a fast day.
