What happened to the walls and corridors? Is this supposed to be a reference to another roguelike? |

I don't get whatever reference this is, but I like it anyway. Avoiding an epic battle via is so typical of NetHackers. E. |

It's the bridge scene in the mines of Moria in LotR. There aren't any walls, just because there aren't any. It's like a bottomless . Except that it isn't bottomless. |

Ah, then that black space should really be filled with a bunch of "^" (for holes, really, rather than pits). |

(I have been reading, just not posting.)
I liked it. The reference is excellent (though used before), and the fact that Nethack uses a lot of stuff from Tolkien's world (including , and ) makes it even better.
As for the , I wasn't sure if I remembered correctly (I did), but from Wikia wiki http://nethack.wikia.com/wiki/ :
"Note that there must be something, like you or any dropped object, in the same square with for it to be active and have effect--an engraving on an otherwise bare square will not deter monsters."
While not all monsters respect , I can't find anything that indicates that won't. So that's good too. |

I can't believe there are so many Dudley's Dungeon readers who have never heard of or used this trick while playing nethack. Blocking annoying monsters with locked doors, engraved Elbereths, or scrolls of scare monster is a staple for high-rate ascenders. |

The DevTeam wrote it into the game- it´s not a cheat. Think of Wiz mode as a cheat- you get unlimited wishing, never die, doesn´t check scoreboard, etc. doesn´t work against everything, can be hard or impossible to write, dulls some weapons... if it´s a cheat it´s a pretty lame one. It´s only to give people breathing room when they´re surrounded by predators and on 1HP.
Also- Does anyone else see any weird A symbols around my apostrophes?
Hmmm... Linux weirdness with keyboards... |

I voted M at first, but I'm dropping it to P because I don't think a two-panel gag stretched over six deserves to rank this high. |

@: The DevTeam wrote it into the game...
Sure. But did the DevTeam make it possible for a n00b to learn about it even after many hours of playing? Maybe the will tell you about it, if you pay the right price, but that leaves it pretty obscure. I bet most people know of it only by spoilers. And to me that makes it questionable at a minimum. |

Sure they did! Here's something else that's not a cheat, Slowpoke: the Guidebook. http://www.nethack.org/v343/Guidebook.html |

Yes.
Rumors.tru has four entries on the subject, and .txt comtains:
"The name of may strike fear into the hearts of thine enemies, if thou dost write it upon the ground at thy feet. If thou maintainest the utmost calm, thy safety will be aided greatly, but beware lest thy clumsy feet scuff the inscription, cancelling its potence."
@T-Jack: So do I. I need to find out what will engrave it right besides markers but I'm too lazy to do so. |

How to engrave effectively? If you're just looking to a treasure , use a junk . When you're in a hurry, your options are markers, athemes (which means Magicbane, as the only way to get normal athemes is from liches), and wands of digging, fire, or lightning. Or you can just scribble in the dust and use a levitation to avoid rubbing it out. |

You're forgetting a hard gemstone -- engraving is a way to tell hard gemstones apart from the soft ones and glass.
When engraving with a gem or weapon, remember to only carve one or two letters at a time. Engraving the E-word is magical and it seems you can't stop even if a monster is whomping on you. Engraving with a weapon also dulls it. Handy if you need to reduce the enchantment on a to get it to stack with others for enchanting. (I generally don't think of daggers as "junk" unless I'm playing a class that's no good with them. Enchanted daggers are awesome.)
I mostly end up using my finger to write in the dust, as most of the time that I need the E-word is when I'm just starting out. By the time I get a fire, I generally have plenty of other escape methods and just save my charges. A gemstone's usually employed for carving a safe spot before I enter the zoo at the top of Soko-ban, though. It's nice to be able to back up a step or two and be safe.

The most effective way to write is with a fire, burning it into the floor. (I think wands of lightning also do this, but that blinds you.) Messages burned into the floor are permanent, and won't go away unless you remove them; so if you need to pass back and forth across your protected square a lot, that's the way to go. (Although note that the engraving isn't permanent if it's on ice instead of stone.)
Aside from that, Magicbane is an excellent choice, as it engraves quickly and doesn't dull or run out of charges. As long as it's not cursed. But if you don't have Magicbane (or haven't killed any liches), wands of digging are fast and produce a true engraving; hard gems produce a true engraving, and don't dull, but are slow. Failing all this, magic markers are good for an emergency; if you don't have one (or a levitation, which I always seem to forget about), you can just write in the dust repeatedly - as long as there's at least one intact on the square, the magic holds. (Elb?rethElberethEl??reth?lbe?e?? works, for instance.) |

I have played Nethack on and off since the first Hack. I remember obtaining the in the Maze, having to defeat the to get to the overlying the . With the above discussion, I have learned something new for the modern harder version of Nethack. After 20 or so years of experience of Hack in its Vanilla Variants, learning something new always keeps the game refreshed. There is always something to discover. |
