m - stamped scrollAnd I was gazing on the surges prone,
With many a scalding tear and many a groan,
When at my feet emerg'd an old man's hand,
Grasping this scroll, and this same slender wand.
I knelt with pain--reached out my hand--had grasp'd
Those treasures--touch'd the knuckles--they unclasp'd--
I caught a finger: but the downward weight
O'erpowered me--it sank. Then 'gan abate
The storm, and through chill aguish gloom outburst
The comfortable sun. I was athirst
To search the book, and in the warming air
Parted its dripping leaves with eager care.
Strange matters did it treat of, and drew on
My soul page after page, till well-nigh won
Into forgetfulness; when, stupefied,
I read these words, and read again, and tried
My eyes against the heavens, and read again.

Not rated because I stopped playing The Game altogether.

Interesting concept, but I can't see much of a joke.

In somewhat related news, I also wrote a similar comic at roughly the same time as this one, which was an odd coincidence.

Quint, if I read the rules rightly, you can't actually quitMaltar: [...] I remembered a little saying I learned my first
day at the academy.
Natalie: Yeah, yeah, I know. Winners never quit and quitters
never win.
Maltar: What? No! Winners never quit and quitters should be
cast into the flaming pit of death.

playing. You can only keep losing. I am not a pro at the game, however. I keep forgetting to announce that I have lost. Like now.

Wellan, try http://losethegame.com/ .

Hpp3, I guess that means you lost on two different levels.

Mediocre. The "Game" is a stupid concept, and it doesn't work so well in this context either. Besides which, http://xkcd.com/391/

Slowpoke: I object to The Game, on the grounds that it is a broken p.o.s., so I set my own rules about it for myself.

If someone is actually going to go to the trouble of hanging a bunch of "I lost the game" medals on me, though, they will be entertaining little objects for discus practice.

You know, I just stopped caring about The Game alltogether.

SomeoneElse, that might be the poor man's definition of winning. Congrats.

Hawkes, while I wouldn't defend this comic as an E-rated masterpiece, I think the joke works well enough. Dudley's never heard of The Game, while Dogley seems to be into it, and it's Dogley's bad luck that a letter addressed to Dudley has caused HIM to lose; meanwhile Dudley is probably assuming that he's somehow lost at NetHack yet again and is just waiting for the grave"Who'd care to dig 'em," said the old, old man,
"Those six feet marked in chalk?
Much I talk, more I walk;
Time I were buried," said the old, old man.

I know about the game (darn, I lost...) and have been playing for a while, but I still didn't find the comic all that funny.

Though, on the other hand, Slowpoke makes a good point. Rating +1.

I detest "the game" and am tempted to rate this Poor. But I guess a Fair is what it deserves.

I lose!

I don't get what people have against The Game - it's not SUPPOSED to be taken seriously! It's just a funny little thing to do.

I too have already won and completed The Game, but after reading Slowpoke's comment I decided to rate up.

"The Game" actually raises an interesting philosophical question, can you impose a game on someone such that the rules don't allow them to quitMaltar: [...] I remembered a little saying I learned my first
day at the academy.
Natalie: Yeah, yeah, I know. Winners never quit and quitters
never win.
Maltar: What? No! Winners never quit and quitters should be
cast into the flaming pit of death.

is usually implied in the rules of a game, but it's interesting to wonder what happens when a game explicitly denies that rule.

Interesting for about five minutes, that is.
