"Before you die, you pick up The ."
I think it's greased. Doesn't get stuck but rather slips off when you least expect it. |

Isn't NetHack's invisibility borrowed from LotR to begin with? |

Dav: not really. It's just a plain old invisibility with no extra traits. Invisibility is merely a side-effect of a Power, experienced when such a is worn by someone who lacks the skill and power to master it -- they are pushed towards the spirit realm, and if they wear it long enough, they will vanish completely.
OTOH, when worn by someone capable of wielding one, a Power becomes invisible to the average mortal eye -- like Galadriel's . That enables her to hide her people from Sauron's eye; the kings of dwarves used their rings for wealth; the kings of men used theirs for power up until they ensnared by Sauron's power and became the ringwraiths; and The One grants its wearer the power to draw and command armies and bend others to his will, among other things.

Actually yeah, in any Nethack game, there are a maximum of nine randomly-generated , each carrying one cursed invisibility. Which enemy carries the one to rule them all is anybody's guess. |

none of the nazguls would, Salisian. They would all be carrying the lesser rings of power that given to them originally, not the One .
By the way, glad you guys (mostly) liked it... I was expecting a fair rating... |

(sorry for all the posts, but there's no edit button...)
also, for the record, the one would not be cursed, as you can take it off once you put it on. |

Actually, the One is cursed, just not in the NetHack sense.
"Fly, you fools." That cracks me up! |

HappyFoppy: In "The Fellowship of the " (book or movie), the attack in the Moria mines is heralded by "drums in the deep". The fellowship manage to flee the mines but Gandalf stays behind ("Fly, you fools!") to fight off a , which is depicted with an & in NetHack. And (W) are attracted by someone wearing the One . |

My thanks to Mantar. I had never actually understood why the Rings of Power made some people invisible and some people not.
But I guess I'm not that much of an LoTR fan. |
