Newts! BTW: aren't Grid Bugs the weakest enemies in nethack? (Only judged by the amount of deaths by them when frozen to the floor or fainted)

Especially cancelled grid bugs.

Lichens give 4 XP because they can grab onto you; some special abilities increase the XP value of the monster (see: krakens), and that's one of them. (I also suspect it may be the Dev Team taking pity on low-level characters.)
