Newts!
BTW: aren't Grid Bugs the weakest enemies in nethack? (Only judged by the amount of deaths by them when frozen to the floor or fainted) |

Tux: I think is the weakest one as it can't hurt at all. |

The weakest enemy would be a cancelled . Now it can't do damage, does not leave a revivable corpse, tries to scurry on to the "grid" angles and bites for no damage... Loses shock resistance... Can't carry anything. You could be surrounded by floating eyes and a cancelled , while starving and deathly sick, and hallucinating, and survive easily. (The bites. You are shocked back to your senses!) And they're slow. Also: They provide no nutrition because of no corpse. Lichens can hold you in place while trying to flee from a . (Unlikely, yes, but...)
And their corpses can be revived. And they can choke you to , like newts, even when dead! And, like newts, can cause food poisoning. If you think about it, lichens are much harder to deal with in an overall sense than grid bugs. Especially cancelled grid bugs. |

Lichens give 4 XP because they can grab onto you; some special abilities increase the XP value of the monster (see: krakens), and that's one of them. (I also suspect it may be the Dev Team taking pity on low-level characters.) |

's can't cause food poisoning. Their corpses stay safe to eat forever. |
