Why is there a mimicThe ancestors of the modern day chameleon, these creatures can
assume the form of anything in their surroundings. They may
assume the shape of objects or dungeon features. Unlike the
chameleon though, which assumes the shape of another creature
and goes in hunt of food, the mimic waits patiently for its
meals to come in search of it.

Oh no, combination locks in nethack! I hope that never happens! Cute idea though :)

SomeoneElse, +2 helm of brilliance does the trick. as for the mimicThe ancestors of the modern day chameleon, these creatures can
assume the form of anything in their surroundings. They may
assume the shape of objects or dungeon features. Unlike the
chameleon though, which assumes the shape of another creature

What do you mean by "I hope that neer happens!"? This is most definitely the drawbride at the Castle. The one that doesn't open unless you play the right tune.

Can also get 20 int naturally as an elfThe Elves sat round the fire upon the grass or upon the sawn
rings of old trunks. Some went to and fro bearing cups and
pouring drinks; others brought food on heaped plates and
dishes.
"This is poor fare," they said to the hobbits; "for we are
lodging in the greenwood far from our halls. If ever you are
our guests at home, we will treat you better."
"It seems to me good enough for a birthday-party," said Frodo.
Pippin afterwards recalled little of either food or drink, for
his mind was filled with the light upon the elf-faces, and the
sound of voices so various and so beautiful that he felt in a
waking dream. [...]
Sam could never describe in words, nor picture clearly to
himself, what he felt or thought that night, though it remained
in his memory as one of the chief events of his life. The
nearest he ever got was to say: "Well, sir, if I could grow
apples like that, I would call myself a gardener. But it was
the singing that went to my heart, if you know what I mean."

and speaking of the castle drawbridge, I've ascended 12 times, and gotten past the castle a handfull of other times, and my most recent ascension was the first time I ever figured out the combination via the mastermind puzzle.

is disguised as a suit of armor. Hope that clears things up.

It would take a lot more than 20 intelligence to do this automatically.

Later in the game, mimics actually start to disguise themselves, as, for example, $ or ) or even >, to try and get you fooled into thinking that that's what they really are.

SomeoneElse - really? When I play a random tune in front of the drawbridge I don't get any clues. Maybe I have to be standing in exactly the right square... 15 years of nethack, a dozen ways of circumventing the castle, and still new things. that is what makes it a great game, eh? :D

Why bother masterminding when you've got knock as a spell? It can open AND close the drawbridge at will.
