spoilers of sorts
Kal Zekdor, tiles that have no symbol on them are ghosts. It appears to me, that Dudley is about to be attacked by roughly 10 ghosts and a LichenThe chamber was of unhewn rock, round, as near as might
be, eighteen or twenty feet across, and gay with rich
variety of fern and moss and lichen. The fern was in
its winter still, or coiling for the spring-tide; but
moss was in abundant life, some feathering, and some
gobleted, and some with fringe of red to it.

What do you think killed all the ghosts? ;-)
Besides, before calling undead stuff wimpy, try playing late enough... Lost at least one character to not knowing...

Ghosts DO hurt...first two occasions when I met them I got killed without realising what was going on...and the third time it was partly because of that neat pile of cursed loot left there on the floor.

Thanks, Will Mc, I never got far enough to see a ghostAnd now the souls of the dead who had gone below came swarming
up from Erebus -- fresh brides, unmarried youths, old men
with life's long suffering behind them, tender young girls
still nursing this first anguish in their hearts, and a great
throng of warriors killed in battle, their spear-wounds gaping
yet and all their armour stained with blood. From this
multitude of souls, as they fluttered to and fro by the
trench, there came a moaning that was horrible to hear.
Panic drained the blood from my cheeks.

Ghosts go through walls too, so they can surround you even if you're in a doorwayThrough me you pass into the city of woe:
Through me you pass into eternal pain:
Through me among the people lost for aye.
Justice the founder of my fabric mov'd:
To rear me was the task of power divine,
Supremest wisdom, and primeval love.
Before me things create were none, save things
Eternal, and eternal I endure.
All hope abandon ye who enter here.

Ghosts can even surround you in lava/underwater. The only way a deathsquad of ghosts couldn't surround you would be in a 1x1, 2x2, 1x2, 1x3, 1xanything, or 2xanything dungeon level, and the odds of that are zero.
